My path to Hope Rescue Mission was typical in that my physical challenges prevent me from pursuing employment and housing the common way and that for which the programs here are designed, however, I was not less in need of help. You see, I am a bit of Samuel, Jonah and the Prodigal Son … all rolled up into one. God, in His mercy, has brought me back into fellowship with Him and the Love shown here has been an integral part of His restoration process. Here I have found the freedom to re-establish my relationship with Him, intermingle with people I can and have learned from and, just as importantly, see God’s hand work in the lives of others. While I may have physical difficulties, which limit me in some areas, I have had no problems with my powers of observation.

I have only been here about 6 weeks but during that time I have seen men who could have been steam rolled by life gain a new perspective on God’s plans and His point of view. Some of you may know of the recent wonderful accomplishments of one of our residents in that he accomplished a significant milestone in his pursuit of a life long employment goal but did you know prior to that, he accepted Christ as his Savior and had been Baptized… all while here at the Mission ? Another resident had applied for a job, which seemed a certainty.  He was well qualified for it and even knew the man interviewing him for the position. Several of us were praying very hard that he would get this job and so you can imagine the cloud that settled on us when it was learned that the position had been filled by someone else. I suppose God had Isaiah 55:6-9 in mind because a few days later our job seeker got a call from that company. No, they didn’t want to hire him for the job he had applied for; they wanted him for a better job… a higher paying job!  You cannot convince me that God isn’t alive and working right here.

I have seen with my own eyes the emotions on a young mothers face as our Houseman, Mike, explains to her, in his quiet gentle way, what  items that are here to offer her, asking her about her particular needs, and she realizes someone really cares. I have seen the gratitude of a husband and father as he finally gets a bed for he and his wife after months of sleeping on the floor.  I have seen dedication to the Lord’s Service and care for the Spiritual well being of the residents here through Mike Dekker and the unrivalled sacrifice of Jim & Barb who, with no small amount of grace and good nature, make our daily lives pleasant and hopeful.

So, how has GLC HOPE Ministries made an impact on my life? I cannot in these few words begin to say but what I can say is that I know this place to be a Beacon of Light and Hope where it is desperately needed and where the Love of Jesus can be seen daily.
